it's good to see some of you guys from across the pond interested in this. we'll be happy to answer any questions we're able to (and even some we're not).
My girlfriend would love to see the UK sometime, but I'm not telling her I plan on making a soapbox kart that can fold up into a suitcase for easy inter-continental travel ;-)

I can vouch for that Mark, these folks are very helpful and a nice bunch of guys to chat with. I do hope you can get a group of your friends together for a little down hill fun. This underground hobby is picking up momentum as the months go by, and it would be great to see the U.K. have a group too.

Thanks for the welcome guys , i am still in the planning stage at the moment , thinking BMX wheels and light weight , got a few doodles , been today to price the tube : £17 for 6m ( 1insX 1ins 16g) i have also rece,d a couple of possable hills , one that looks good is the "Pen-y-pass" but it is scarey so we will see Numbersix , i live just down the road from "the village"

alrighty well i guess I'll point you to my Links Galore
post, advising you to pay special attention to the SFVISBF Tech board.
they have a couple years' worth of archived messages relating to the
more technical aspect of kart building, from some very experienced guys.
if you do use bicycle wheels, just make sure you have a solid frame.
one guy who visited us from the NJUSBF was using bicycle wheels on a
less-than-ideal frame and it ended up flipping him at 80kph. also,
bicycle wheels can fold under side loading like going around turns
really fast or, if you go around a turn too fast and end up sideways.
And the skinnier the tire, the higher the pressure and the greater the
chance of a flat. Though I have always wanted to see how those hard
plastic 4-spoke rims hold up - they'd require no truing, and BMX tires
are pretty wide.
That being said, there are plenty of instances of people having very
quick karts with bicycle wheels that have never had any crashes, I just
wanted to make you aware that they may require a bit more consideration
in design.

Mark, I agree with Jeremy for your wheels. Solid frame (mag style) is your better bet for stability, what you calling BMX wheels. Talk to your buddies over there, have a couple, two tree beers and see if you can light a fire under their butts.
So, you're just down the road from the "Village". That's has to be very cool for you. Do you get a chance to visit it now and then? Be seeing you.

Download google earth so you can see the altitude of the road way. that Penlanffos rd looks like it will be .81 of mile and drop close to 370 ft depending on how balls out you want to be .. should be 8% grade .. Looks to be divided at the top and i cant tell if its dirt also

RE:Noobie Alert :)

markWoody, WELCOME! Over the last year, we have had a few folks from the UK inquire and wanted to get something going. One was from Leads, one from the Island of Jersey and another fromn the south east corner, but inland a bit, I can't remember the name of the town. So it looks like everyone over there that would like to try this is spread out! But if you have 3 boys interested in joining you, you are already 2 a head of where we started last year! Before you start bulding, you may want to consider what to build. Do you want all 4 cars to be the same? That way it is driver skill that gets you to the bottom first? Or just build what ever you like and who ever has the best wheel/tire/bearing/aero package wins? We started off simple and built our first 6 cars almost identical. A simple 2' x 4', 1 inch square tube frame with identical seats and all the same wheels/tires. They wern't real fast, but it got us going and out there. And unless the guys from New Jersey came down to run with us, we were all pretty closely matched. Since our first race this season, all the cars have undergone extensive modifications. And they are now all different as far as body work, and wheel/tire selections. They have all gotton a lot faster. So any way, get busy building! Keep us posted! And if I can find the old e-mail address from one of the other guys in the UK, I'll forward it along.

you see, BPat here from new jersey has mastered the art of insults (and signing into tom's account, apparently). His attack is so berthed in incoherent ignorance that there's simply nothing you can say to adequately describe it, much less form an appropriate response. Hell I don't even know what he meant and given the fact that he was probably drunk when he wrote it, i bet he doesn't either. was he making a reference to the ECC? saying that the misfits (or blue-eyed people) would somehow be inferioir soldiers? I have no idea.

WOOOhOOO , i collected my steel yesterday ( 1 inchX1inch 16g) 18metres :) , i am using bicycle BMX 20inch wheels , these bikes are tough and do stunts with big jumps so the wheels should take a bit of punishment (as they only have 12mm spindles i am suporting them on both sides), i have put up my "outside workshop" (its a gazeebo in my back yard) , i pick up the mig on monday so for now its more doodles and plans :) does anyone know what the magic amounts of camber, caster, KPI ,etc ?

again, I'd head over to the SFVISBF Tech Boards for that information since they have more carts that run with bike wheels. but try this link (a document on camber, caster, and toe posted on their boards) *edit* i just checked out that website and if you go to the cairngorm even page(link in upper right, under "upcoming events") the banner image is a guy sideways on a kart . . . folding both his right-hand side bicycle wheels. make sure to get at least 6 bike wheels

RE:Noobie Alert :)
(Date Posted:10/31/2009 18:28 PM)
I've often thought about using bike wheels with coaster brakes. Just run the chains up to a hand or foot lever and use the coaster brake set up.
The one problem with any of the bike wheels is that they are not designed to take any sort of side load. So they will collapse if you get to cornering with too many G's.
I collected up a few motor cycle front wheels that I thought about using on the rear of my car. They are HEAVY and I'm not so sure they would really work well because of that. But they appear to be strong enough that they should handle what we are doing. And they have a nice big brake disc already attatched!
Some guys are running Moped wheels or like The Jerm, pocket bike wheels. His wheels also have 12mm axles, so that is why he has the wheel cages on his wheels. That supports that little axle on both sides.
We did have those wheels with 12mm axles on the front of the DW1386X. They were only supported on one side. We expected them to bend, but the car was light enough that it wasn't a problem. They performed very well with no problems in several races. However, they did get destroyed in the big crash in October. But I'm not too sure anything would have survived that one.
If you are trying to make Applehead, you better start with their rule book! That type of racing is a lot different then what we do. They have a LOT of build rules and you will be up against some serious competition.
We just slap together what ever we want, how we want and go down the hill. The extent of our rules is almost 4 wheels, brakes and we do have a size limit of 8 feet long and 4 feet wide. If the cars get bigger then that it just makes it too difficult to get through traffic.
As for this stuff... (What is this other unrelated stuff ? blue eyed ? winning bitches ?) Thats the New Jersey boys crying because The Jerm won the East Coast Challenge! They are just poor loosers! We have a year to brag about it and they have a year to cry about it and then we'll try again!

Yea it is arranged a lot different over this end , but i don't see why a cart built to the rules for the "official scene" cant be used in the manner that you enjoy , i have seen a couple of bike wheeled carts doing the hills in australia Here : http://vimeo.com/channels/undergroundsoapbox so i was hoping to be able to do both , but if things work out (or not) i wouldn't mind having a cart for each :)

Ah, pull there fingers out of what Mark? Yes I see a couple of the the Australian gang go with bicycle wheels and they do pretty good. I see them fold up pretty easy too. Still if you like to run that set-up that's cool. The only thing I would do, if it where my cart, is be sure it's the BMX style rims simply for better stability. In any case whether you build to specific specs or go out law, fun is the name of the game, and you seem to have a good mind set for that.
On my cart I'm going with the stock steel wheels.

No matter which way you go, keep in mind things can go terribly wrong very quickly. reference; http://vimeo.com/6899999So we have now decided that ALL our loaner cars will have roll over and side impact protection. When you are running on the ragged edge, sometimes you fall off! And other times, you are just in the wrong place! At this point all our cars except the DW1386X which Ice Man was driving, have roll over and impact protection. The DW1386X still has a bent frame and we just havn't taken the time to correct that yet. BUT it will get fixed and the proper roll bar will be installed before the December race. We still have a few guys who are running open cars, but after experiancing the October crash, I don't think I would put myself back into an open car. But it takes time and work to get things where you want them. So if starting with an open car is where you are, then don't let that stop you. All our cars were open cars when we started and each has evolved into something different.

yeah numbersix has a good point. there's a difference between BMX wheels and simply regular 20-inch bicycle wheels though they're both the same diameter. BMX wheels usually have either more spokes or a heavier gauge spoke since they're meant to do all sort of crazy stuff with an adult on them.
and if you and your buddies just ant to get going, there's really no problem getting started in an open kart. as you upgrade your kart to make it faster and you get more used to driving these things, becoming a faster driver, be aware that higher-speed accidents have a tendency to cause more damage.

Your gazebo blew away. Did you have a hurricane come through Wales? Speaking of gazebo's I built one for myself a couple of years ago from supplies people were discarding. My biggest score was the walls that came from two giant wooden crates shipped in from Italy for a job I was helping with at Lockheed-Martin. It currently houses my two motorcycles (which is what I purpose built it for) in it.
Well Mark, I hope you can get yours back together again soon, good luck with that. And did you talk to any of your friends yet about your racer?
